Federal ruling striking down part of DOMA

I'm very pleased about that part of the so-called Defense of Marriage Act was declared unconstitutional today. There was a huge outcry on the boards about this, including lots of stuff from a substantial collection of idiots who were demonstrating a profound ignorance of the law, what judges do, Christianity, the history of marriage, what the Constitution says, and homosexuality. It was kind of a clean sweep. Almost disappointing, really, that none of the ones I saw seemed to be able to rally even a cogent argument against gay marriage. It was all canned drivel, badly spelled and very poorly presented.

In response to this, though, there was someone who posted a really lovely comment:

All of you against gay marriage, indulge me and explain one thing, Without using the words God, Bible, Christianity, Sin or any other theological notions, tell me why two people who love one another enough to make a commitment as serious as marriage should not be permitted to do so? And spare me the argument that gay marriage would ruin the "sanctity" of the institution. Heteros did that a long time ago.

Charlene Strong to meet with the President

I know Charlene Strong from the Washingtonians. She is a wonderful singer and a great person. 3 years ago, her wife Kate (who was also a wonderful singer and a great person) was killed in a tragic accident. Charlene's experiences thereafter underscored why LGBT couples need marriage rights as much as anyone else. I wish her great success meeting with the President next week.

There's an article in the Huffington Post about what she's going to be doing. Please share the video clip with folks, particularly with people who aren't aware of why marriage rights are important for everyone.

With today's news about Indiana Congressman Mark Souder, family values candidate and 18th-century moralist extraordinaire, getting caught screwing a staffer (hehehehehe) and having to resign (hehehehehehehehehehehehehehe), I thought I needed to write something about the stupidity of one of Souder's favorite hobby-horses, that being abstinence-only education. Nope, turns out I already did 3 years ago when we were suffering from the Bush Administration's beknighted view of the world.  Turned out there were a few thoughts that I wanted to expand upon in the original post (which I did), and that in turn prompted me to write this post now. 

In the last couple months, I've been aiming people at several of my political posts, so I thought it might be relevant to highlight them in a single post that's easy to get to. (This will have to do until such time as I get around to adding indexing keywords to the zillions of posts that are here already for easier reference.)
